Know the Breeder

My name is Adriana. I am the face behind 4MLA Stables.  My husband and I have loved the Australian Shepherd breed for many years, owning our own when we lived with our parents. I am from the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles while my Husband grew up in San Jose Ca. I have owned Labradors, Chihuahuas, Border Collies and Australian Shepherds. My First Mini Australian Shepherd was in 2014 and since then I fell in love.

Originally we started our program in Gilroy CA when we bought our first home, but now we reside in Prunedale CA. We own 2.5 acres with 2 decent size pastures, our home, our warehouse/garage, and lots of critters.

Our program began because of the love for the breed. We started with knowing the basics of the breed, but we have learned immensely in the past 7 years. We started with 2 ASDR registered dogs. My stud prospect ended up being sterile and after months of treatment and some big losses we chose to move forward. I ended up with another female who was able to go from ASDR to AKC while the stud books for Mini American Shepherds was open. This started to drive my program to a different direction. Now all of our dogs are AKC Miniature American Shepherds. 2 of our girls originating from ASDR and going through SDRS & MASCUSA to register them to AKC. This was a great opportunity to add to the gene pool of Mini Americans in AKC. From here we decided to do more changes. Perry was Bred to a Champion Show Stud and we kept 2 females from 2 different litters to use in the future. We have added other lines and dogs  to again further better our program and have the best always to offer when we have available puppies.

Our program started with just testing for the Mini American Shepherd Panel Test to now doing the panel, NAD (Neuroaxonal Dystrophy) test, and OFAs (Eyes, Hips, Elbows). The Panel test includes:

Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA)

Degenerative Myelopathy (DM)

Hereditary Cataracts (Australian Shepherd Type)

Hyperuricosuria (HUU)

Multidrug Sensitivity (MDR1)

Multidrug Sensitivity is caused by a deletion in the ABCB1 gene, also known as the multidrug resistance 1 (MDR1) gene, and is characterized by neurotoxicity following the use of certain common drugs. Dogs with two copies of MDR1 will exhibit multidrug sensitivity. Some dogs with 1 copy of MDR1 may also exhibit multidrug sensitivity.

Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration (PRA-prcd)

Canine Multifocal Retinopathy 1 (CMR1)

Chondrodystrophy (CDDY and IVDD) and Chondrodysplasia (CDPA)

American Kennel Club

AKC

Most of our dogs are registered now with the AKC. We are planning to be a bigger part in the world such as sports, conformation, obedience, etc. We also have dogs who are Dual Registered with ASDR and AKC.

Genetic Testing

We have used Paw Prints Genetics now owned by Neogen. But we are currently using UC Davis as our Lab for testing.

  • Collie Eye Anomaly
  • Degenerative Myelopathy
  • Herditary Cataracts
  • Hyperuricosria
  • Intertinal Cobalamin Malabsorption ( Both Australian Shepherd and BC type)
  • Multidrug Resistance 1 (MDR1)
  • Multifocal Retinopathy 1
  • Progressive RetinalAtrophy, Progressive Rod Cone Degeneration

Australian Shepherds and most other Herding Dogs are common carriers of the MDR1 gene so do not be alarmed to see it in any report. It is very common to now be considered a norm as long as these "carriers" are not bred together.

Also note that when a dog carries the mdr1 gene, certain medications should not be administered. By doing so, you can be endangering their lives. Hit the link to learn more about PAW PRINT GENETICS and let me know if you have any other questions regarding Genetic Testing.

I highly recommend this to any pet owner. Especially Dog owners and even more so to new puppy owners. I have affiliated my breeding program with Trupanion. You do not have to insure your puppy with them, but they do offer a great deal when you sign up from the breeder support program. The Trupanion Breeder Support Program protects litters from the unexpected when they head to their new homes. The special Go Home Day Offer waives the waiting periods and Pay out Limits. I will provide you with this information when you obtain your puppy.
